The UNC in Sevilla program offers two distinct summer programs. These programs provide students with the opportunity to study Spanish language and culture, as well as other subjects. Classes are taken with other summer program students at the Centro Internacional de Estudios Culturales (CINECU).

UNC in Seville
The UNC in Sevilla-Summer Program is designed for students with various academic interests. Participants in this six week program will study Spanish language and culture. The program is divided into advanced and intermediate levels and students will be placed according to their level of Spanish.
Course Offerings Advanced
Courses for the Advanced Level – Nivel avanzado
For students who have completed Spanish 300/50 (Advanced Grammar and Composition) or the equivalent.
Each student will choose two of the following three modules:
SPANISH ART AND CULTURE:
SEVI 346 – THE HISTORY OF SPANISH ART / Historia del arte español
Introduction to the history of Spain and the major styles of Spanish art.
SPAN 340 Cultures of Contemporary Spain.
Prerequisite, SPAN 300. Recent trends in thought, art, film, music, and social practices. Highlights regions such as Galicia, the Basque country, Catalonia, and Andalusia. Topics include nationalism, ethnicity, gender, migration, and popular culture.
Irene added: Its intention is to provide the students with 1) a context to understand and appreciate the cultural manifestations produced in modern and contemporary Spain (understood as an amalgam of very different cultures) and 2) the theoretical tools to analyze these cultural manifestations.
**This is a GRADED CREDIT course. You will receive a letter grade which will be calculated in your GPA.

LANGUAGE:
SEVI 350 – CONVERSATION, GRAMMAR AND WRITING / Conversación, gramática y redacción
A review of selected topics in Spanish grammar, with special attention to the correct usage of these structures in conversation. Emphasis on the development of idiomatic expression. Includes cultural readings and practice in writing.

LITERATURE:
SEVI 372 – SPANISH LITERATURE FROM 1700 TO THE PRESENT / Literatura Española desde 1700 hasta actualidad
An introduction to the literature of Spain from the 18th century to the present. Spanish 260/21 and Spanish 300/50 or their equivalents are both prerequisites for this course.
Course Offerings Intermediate
Courses for the Intermediate Level – Nivel intermedio
For students who have completed Spanish 204/4 and/or Spanish 260/21 or 255/23 or the equivalent.
All Intermediate students will take the following course:
SEVI 335 – CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE SPANISH EMPIRE / Historia cultural de España y su imperio
A general introduction to the political and cultural history of Spain.

LANGUAGE COURSE:
Students will choose one of the following courses depending on individual background in language. If you have not completed Spanish 260/21 (Introduction to Spanish and Spanish American Literature) or 255/23 (Conversation I) you are required to choose SEVI 265 Spanish for the Professions:
SEVI 265 SPANISH FOR THE PROFESSIONS / El español para las profesiones.
A course emphasizing the vocabulary and structures of the language of mass communications, business, health professions, and political institutions. This course may be used as a fifth semester course for both Spanish department minors (Hispanic Studies and Spanish for the Professions).
SEVI 300 ADVANCED GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION / Curso avanzado de gramática y redacción.
A review of major topics in Spanish grammar, with special attention to the correct usage of these structures in writing. Emphasis on the development of idiomatic written expression. Includes frequent compositions.

Course Load
You will take two classes for a total of 6 credit hours.
Registration Deadlines
You will register for classes before arriving in Sevilla. You will be allowed to make changes to your schedule during the first two days of classes.
Notes on Registration
As is true for registration at your home college or university, it is the responsibility of each student to make sure that (s)he has officially registered all course changes with the program.
Non-UNC students should be aware of their home institution’s policy regarding courses and credit hours.
Class Attendance
Classes will be held Monday-Friday. You are expected to attend every class, take all exams as scheduled by the professor, and turn in written work as required for the individual course.
You should also be aware that:
- Traveling is an educational experience, but you are expected to schedule your traveling around your academic needs, not vice versa. You should plan to travel before the program begins or after the program has ended, not during the official program dates. If you are out of town and in the process miss an exam or fail to turn in written work, you will receive an “F” for that portion of your grade.
Grades
All grades (notas, calificaciones) in courses will be based either on a number scale (1-10, 10 being the highest grade) or the words sobresaliente, notable, aprobado, suspenso. Students will need to receive a grade of 5 or aprobado in order to receive UNC transfer equivalency (TREQ) credit. Please refer to the Credit Information Sheet on the UNC Study Abroad website.

UNC SCIENCE in Seville
The UNC in Sevilla Science Summer offers a great opportunity for science students to study organic chemistry in a foreign setting, while perfecting their Spanish language skills. A North Carolina professor will serve as Professor-in-Residence and teach one science course.
Course Offerings
Courses for the UNC Science in Sevilla – Summer program
Students in the UNC Science in Sevilla- Summer program will take CHEM 262 Introduction to Organic Chemistry II, and a Spanish Language course.
CHEM 262 Introduction to Organic Chemistry II
This course will be taught in English by a UNC-approved professor. Students will receive UNC graded credit for the course; the grade received in this course WILL affect your UNC GPA. The lab portion of the class will not be taught in Sevilla; students will need to take the lab during the following semester at UNC.
SEVI 270 Español para la comunicación diaria / Spanish Language for Communication
A review of selected topics in Spanish grammar, with special emphasis basic grammatical structures and the correct usage of these structures in conversation. Practical language component consists of conversational Spanish with emphasis on practical vocabulary and structures needed for survival in specific situations: the post office, telephone, the home, stores and markets, food and restaurants, seeking medical help, traveling. Readings on cultural topics are also included throughout the course.

You will take two classes for a total of 6 credit hours. All participants will take the Organic II science class taught in English by a North Carolina professor (3 credits). (Please note that this class will not include a lab.)
Students will take a Spanish language class taught by local Spanish instructors. Placement in the language class will depend on the students’ language level (3 credits).
